We sat down with Jaya King today, one of the featured artists in our Happy Show, to talk about her encaustic artwork. Jaya is one of our local artists, coming to us from San Martin, CA. She paints mainly with gouache on scrap lumber that has been heavily worn and blemished by weather and time, but has begun to experiment with a new medium: encaustic.
Jaya describes encaustic as the "most magical medium" an artist could work with. Watching her work with the beeswax, which is what encaustic medium is made from, is wonderful. During her demo at Jco's Place, she showed onlookers how easy it is to get things out of control with encaustic, but at the same time, it's a great medium for beginners to work with. She told us how when she first started, she was using things she purchased at a thrift store, such as a pancake griddle to melt the encaustic medium, but has since upgraded to a professional grade encaustic griddle.
Jaya's work is on display at JCO'S Place through August 17th, during our Happy Show, along with many of our other featured artists. Be sure to stop by JCO'S Place, located at 45 N. Santa Cruz Avenue, Los Gatos, CA 95030 to get happy and see some fabulously fine art!
