ARTIST STATEMENT

I have spent my career experimenting with materials that serve to best communicate the content of the work. I have used tar, cold wax medium, encaustic painting, mixed metals, found objects and collage. That work sprang from an interior place, synthesizing my experiences into a personal visual vocabulary.

In 2018 I returned home to Pittsburgh after 30 years on the west coast. I have been working   exclusively in oil on wood panel. I am working now in a representational form. These spare means and small-scale formats afford a more intimate relationship with the subject.

This work is my homecoming. It is an exploration of where I came from and the influences of the texture and diversity of the city’s neighborhoods. It is informed by the architecture and the tone that encompasses this place, as I rediscover it.

The series on Paris has allowed me to make connections between the feel of a European sensibility and its influences our east coast cities.

ABOUT

My studio practice began in the late 1970’s. I am ‘self taught’, except that I hovered over the shoulders of every painter who would allow me to soak up their magic. I have a Masters degree in Psychology from Duquesne University, which fueled the fires of my philosophical curiosity for fifty years now. I studied classical drawing and painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia to tame my rebellious approach to making art.

I have been fortunate to have my work exhibited in galleries, art associations, art centers, and museums in the United States, Canada, and Europe. My work has been collected for five decades, and if I can squeeze out three more I will be ecstatic.
